Over the last two years, the world and the University of Washington have experienced unprecedented changes to the way we work and live. During this time the University’s finances have gotten stronger. However, a smaller percentage of their incoming money pays for salaries and benefits for the people who keep these campuses and hospitals running. It is time that the University shares these gains with us.

We, the undersigned members of SEIU 925 and community members, call for the University of Washington to bargain a new union contract that addresses the fundamental issues we face as workers at the University.

We insist our next union contract must address the following:

  • UW must attract and retain committed workers with a pay structure that allows for advancement and longevity.
  • UW must provide flexible and innovative work schedules that meet changing industry standards and staffing that both reflects student and patient needs and creates meaningful work-life-balance for employees.
  • Technology and AI must create workforce opportunities and not diminish or replace workers.
  • Workers must have physical safety and pay protection in the face of climate change impacts during extreme heat, severe storms, and poor air quality. UW must provide mental health support for conflict resolution and paid time for community engagement.
  • UW must embed and resource diversity, equity and inclusion, and racial justice throughout the organization to integrate these values into our daily operations and workplace culture.

As stated in the University’s Vision Statement, the University of Washington must lead in “timely solutions to the world’s most complex problems and enrich the lives of people throughout the community.” We are calling on the university to work with our bargaining team to meet this moment and bargain us into our future.
