Thank you for your continued efforts to plant trees in Kirkland! We ask that you quickly brush up on your tree planting skills before we approve you for this year's tree rebate. Please take a moment to review the information below and take a short quiz on planting requirements. Happy planting!
Always call 811 before you dig. Call 811 or visit callbeforeyourdig.org to request a free utility locate. This will locate your gas, cable, and electric lines. 811 will not locate your sewer or water lines. The City of Kirkland or Northshore Utility District may have the records of sewer/water lines. Contact your sewer/water provider for more information.
Make sure you have enough room for the tree to grow.
Select a location that has enough room for the branches above ground as well as the roots below ground. Consider the mature height, mature canopy width, and root spread when selecting a location. In general, roots will grow at least as wide as the canopy of the tree.

- All trees must be planted on your private property, not in the right of way.
- Avoid utilities. Locate trees at least 10 feet from underground utilities and plant smaller trees (less than 25 feet tall at maturity) under power lines.

Plant right to ensure a healthy tree.
-Dig a shallow, wide planting hole. Measure the height of the root ball. Dig a hole that is as deep as the height of the root ball and 2-3 times the width.
-Be gentle with your trees roots when transferring the tree from a pot to the ground. Gently loosen roots if needed.
-Water your tree immediately after planting.
-Mulch your tree to help retain water in the soil. Leave at least 3" between the mulch and the trunk of your tree.
