Survey: Understanding the needs of the LGBTIQ+ people when accessing treatment and healthcare services |
Recent research1 indicates that LGBTIQ+ people have distinctive healthcare needs. Such needs are called upon to the attention of providers and medical professionals who attend to such needs. It has been identified that while LGBTIQ+ people experience health care disparities and difficulty accessing affirming care, little is known regarding the health and experiences among subpopulations of specific sexual orientations and gender identities.
In general, there is an urgent need to tackle the discrimination and intersectional inequalities that the LGBTIQ+ people are facing in hampering their full and equal enjoyment of the right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.
This survey has been developed in response to a call for greater focus on the unique healthcare needs of LGBTIQ+ people, a call articulated by LGBTIQ+ people themselves, with an additional focus on matters pertaining to HIV/AIDS. The survey is also part of a European funded project on Safeguarding LGBTIQ+ People’s Right to Health (SAFE-R). The consortium to this project consists of the Cyprus Family Planning Association, Dias Media Group, Accept LGBTI Cyprus, the AIDS Solidarity Movement, and the University of Nicosia Research Foundation.
