DESCRIPTION: This class will cover the general topic of cybersecurity giving students an introduction of what makes up cyber security and why cybersecurity is important in our daily lives by demystifying the concept of cybersecurity, explaining it as the practice of protecting digital systems, networks, and data from unauthorized access, cyber attacks, and other potential threats. Participants will gain insight into the importance of cybersecurity in safeguarding sensitive information, preserving privacy, and maintaining the integrity of digital infrastructure.

Outcomes: Participants will also have the opportunity to follow along as the instructor demonstrates hacking Wi-Fi networks and performs reconnaissance on various wireless technologies. This hands-on session will provide participants with a practical understanding of common vulnerabilities associated with wireless networks. Through live demonstrations and interactive exercises, participants will gain insights into techniques used by hackers and how easy it can be to exploit weaknesses in Wi-Fi security protocols.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Brad Metrolis is a Product Security Engineer at The Boeing Company specializing in wireless security and incident response. He has 10 years of experience in cybersecurity and has performed cyber analysis on everything from Samsung phones to 777-9 airplanes. He has taught cybersecurity to the Boeing engineering community for the past 4 years with a passion to inform all levels of understanding how critical cybersecurity is in everyday life.

Megan Johnson is an Electrical Engineer with 10+ years of combined Systems, Software, Cybersecurity, Project Management, Design and Development experience. She currently works within the Mobility, Surveillance & Bombers division of Boeing Defense Space and Security (BDS) as a Product Security Engineer on the KC-46 Pegasus; an aerial refueling aircraft engineered for the USAF. Prior to BDS, Megan was a Cabin and Network Systems Design and Analysis Engineer for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, where she designed the In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity Systems for the 787 Dreamliner. Specializing in wireless technologies, it is Megan who developed the first ever Bluetooth Audio Streaming system for the 787. While in BCA, she also served as a Bluetooth Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the organization. It was during this time that she discovered a passion for cybersecurity and decided to pursue it.

Aside from Boeing, Megan also worked in Boston, MA as an Electrical Building Systems Design Engineer. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University. In her spare time she teaches classes through Ed Wells and SPEEA ACE, is a member of various Women in Cyber groups, involved with Women in Engineering mentorship programs and collegiate engagements involving STEM, volunteers for TSA K-9 Explosives Detection Decoy Program, and enjoys getting outside and staying active in the PNW.
