Introduction

Marine Engine Technician (435A) is an Ontario provincial trade named under the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021 (BOSTA).

The Marine Engine Apprenticeship Training Standard logbook has been updated to reflect changes in the trade. A panel of Subject Matter Experts from across Ontario aided in the creation of this Apprenticeship Training Standard. This “on-the-job” logbook is the standard that identifies the skills an apprentice in Ontario must perform to be considered competent in the trade.

The apprenticeship program plays a significant role in having well trained Marine Engine Technicians by providing continuity and exposure across the diverse range of skill sets and skills within the Marine Engine Technician trade. Having a relevant standard that accurately identifies the skills that an apprentice needs to be competent cannot be achieved without industry feedback.

To strengthen the validity of the document, Skilled Trades Ontario invites additional stakeholders and industry representatives from across Ontario to review and comment on the revised draft standard by completing the validation survey. Included in this survey are the skill sets and skills of the updated draft Apprenticeship Training Standard as well as additional questions for feedback on apprentice completion requirements, industry recommended ratios (Journeyperson to Apprentice) and total recommended benchmark hours required to complete the competencies required on-the-job in this new logbook.
