The California State University (CSU) is the largest and the most economically, ethnically and academically diverse comprehensive university system in the country, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates. The CSU is comprised of 23 campuses throughout the state, more than 481,000 students, 3.7 million alumni and approximately 53,000 faculty and staff.
The Chancellor, working with and through the campus presidents, is responsible for the overall management of the CSU system. The Chancellor is also responsible for the operations of the Office of the Chancellor. The Chancellor works with campus administrations and faculty to ensure the excellence of the instructional program and also to ensure that the educational opportunities provided meet the changing needs of the people of the state of California. The Chancellor, as the chief spokesperson for the CSU system, is the principal representative to all constituencies of the CSU and, in this role, has the responsibility for effectively communicating the university’s mission and effectiveness in meeting that mission. The Chancellor is appointed by the Board of Trustees, and is responsible to the Board of Trustees for the recommendation, implementation and administration of the policies of the Board.
